American Guild of Organists
Nassau and Queens County Chapters
Organ Scholarship Auditions 2011
RULES AND ELIGIBILITY
The Nassau and Queens Chapters of the American Guild of Organists are pleased to announce their first annual joint Scholarship Awards program for current organ students of any age. Two scholarship awards of $800 each are available. Applicants must reside, work, or study in the five boroughs of New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, or Westchester counties.
Candidates must submit the completed application form, along with two letters of reference (see forms attached). One letter must be from the candidate’s private organ teacher, and the other from someone who can speak to the candidate’s musical ability and is not a member of the candidate’s immediate family.
Auditions will be held at 2pm on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 54 Nassau Boulevard, West Hempstead, NY 11552. The candidate must submit acceptable application materials by May 27, 2011 in order to be scheduled for an audition. Candidates will also be given up to 3 hours of practice time on the instrument prior to the audition. The Scholarship Committee will individually negotiate these practice times with the candidate.
Candidates will perform two pieces in contrasting styles. The works chosen should best display the candidate’s ability at the console, and should both be of a similar difficulty level. The candidate must list the edition of each piece that will be used for the audition on the application form. In addition, candidates will be asked to sight-read a short passage of music given by the proctor.
(The candidates are expected to prepare each piece in its entirety, but the adjudicators reserve the right to request that only a portion of each piece is to be played.)
Three adjudicators, chosen by the Scholarship committee, will evaluate the candidates’ performance and determine the scholarship recipients. The awardees will be notified following the audition, and will be publicly recognized at a TBD public AGO event in the fall. Adjudicator’s comments will be mailed to all of the candidates following the audition.
PLEASE NOTE: The live audition is a requirement. Applicants who do not perform at the audition will NOT be considered for the scholarship. Any other accommodations may be made only with the consent of the Scholarship Committee.
All materials must be postmarked by May 27, 2011. Please enclose the non-refundable application fee of $20 (check payable to “Queens Chapter AGO”) and send to:
