It doesn’t seem too long ago that I was thinking how much time we had before September would roll around and the pace of life pick up again. I hope it’s simply a case of time flying while having fun, but September is here and I bet I’m not the only one who is not quite ready.
Fortunately for members of the Queens Chapter of the AGO, we have an extremely diligent and hard working board. Work on our 2008-2009 programming year began long before the end of the last year, and much has been finalized during summer meetings. The results of this planning are reflected in our schedule located elsewhere in this newsletter. Perhaps one of the most obvious advancements is the implementation of an electronic newsletter. Many of our members have opted for receiving the newsletter via e-mail which helps save us some cost, labor, and time. Those who wish to continue receiving a printed copy can, of course. If you wish at any point to switch to paperless, please let us know.
Our year begins, as it thankfully has for many years now, with a barbecue evening at the house of our most gracious Sub-Dean and host, Andy Andela. Those of you who have come in the past know what a great time we have, and how beneficial it is to share our stories, scary or otherwise. Those of our members who rarely or never come to our events really ought to consider a change in pattern this year. Besides the feast to begin it, our year is packed with interesting and educational events from workshops to recitals. 2008-2009 has been designated as the International Year of the Organ, and it would be a shame for anyone in our chapter to miss the opportunity to get involved. The Guild can do a lot for you and you can do a lot for us too, I’m sure. Please be certain to visit our chapter web site www.QueensNYago.org on a regular basis for updates, notices, help, and information. What you won’t want to miss this fall, after our barbecue, of course, is our Gala recital held in October, coinciding with recitals all over the country. In November we will cosponsor a recital by Diane Bish to be held in nearby Rockville Centre. Our best source of advertising has always been you, our membership, so please spread the word among your friends and choristers about both events.
Ken Lord, our newsletter editor among many other roles, has not warned me about length of this message, but rather than have him come after me, I’ll leave you with just a few parting thoughts. Visit our web site often – it changes weekly at least. Consider becoming more active, when possible, in our chapter events. Bring others, encourage membership in the AGO, and attendance at our functions. Lastly, we hope to see you at the September Barbecue. Please look for the details in this newsletter and the web site.
